Will I share the space with any other artists? No. The home is yours and yours alone. Only one resident or resident group will be accepted for each week. Residents have full, exclusive access to the three-bedroom property and its five acres. Applications are accepted from individuals as well as groups of two or three, but each resident must apply individually.
How will I get to the residency?
Residents are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the residency. The nearest major airport is Palm Springs International Airport, approximately 30 to 45 minutes away.
Will I need a car?
While a car is not required, it is strongly recommended. The residency is located about one mile from health food stores, restaurants, and galleries. Although it is possible to complete the residency without a vehicle, rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft can be unreliable in the desert, so arriving without a car is discouraged.
What are the summer months in Joshua Tree like?
Hot. Outdoor activities such as hikes and walks are best done in the early morning or late evening. Midday temperatures can reach the 100s and often remain in the upper 80s or 90s at night. July, August, and September fall within the region’s monsoon season, when sudden storms, strong winds, and downpours can occur. Sunrises and sunsets remain spectacular throughout the summer.
Is there AC at the residency?
Yes. The home is equipped with four split-level air conditioning units, one in each bedroom and one in the main living area.
What temperature is the hot tub?
The hot tub can be heated between 80 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It may also be turned off and used as a cool plunge during warmer months.
What are the work spaces like? For writers, each bedroom in the main house has a desk. While the casita does not have a desk, it does have a daybed that’s perfect for reading. For artists, we ask they remove furniture from their desired workspaces, bring their own drop cloths if necessary
What materials will be provided? Only the time and space will be provided. All residents must bring their own supplies.
What is the lodging like? The Cabins at Sunset & Vine are a privately owned, 5-Star short term rental property. The property contains two separate structures, multiple porches, a hot tub, fire pit, outdoor shower, and is fully stocked with kitchen supplies, spices, olive oil, and coffee courtesy of Joshua Tree Coffee Company. You can view more about the property here.
Can I bring my pet?
Not at this time. We hope to allow pets in future residency sessions.
Can I bring my spouse?
Yes. However, your spouse must submit a separate application and indicate that they will be attending the residency with you.
Can I bring my friend?
Yes. You may attend with up to two friends and fellow artists. Each resident must submit a separate application, pay the application fee, and specify that they will be attending with you.
Are there any work requirements?
No. This is a self-directed residency with no required deliverables, page counts, or formal obligations. While we welcome the opportunity to see what residents create, and hope to share their work on our website and social media, sharing work with us is entirely optional.
Is the residency location ADA accessible?
The property is not ADA accessible. However, it is single-story and situated on flat terrain.
Is there be a security deposit? No. While there will be no security deposit, all residents will be required to sign a damage and liability waiver prior to their stay.
Where does my $25 submission fee go? Your submission is vital to support the work of JTRAW. Your fee will help cover 7-night stays for each of our residency periods, cleaning fees, National Park passes, operating costs such as our website, liability insurance, and, in the future, our ability to offer small stipends to each of our residents.
I’m a high desert business or home owner and would love to get involved. How can I get involved? If you would like to collaborate and offer sponsorship of one or more of our residents or collaborate on future residencies, we’d love that. Please get in touch!
